PITALKHORA CAVES (Aurangabad - Maharashtra - India)

 

 

Dating back to 3rd century BCE, magnificent Pitalkhora Caves are carved out of the rocks making them one of the finest examples of rock-cut Architecture in India. These 14 ancient Buddhist caves are set in the Western Ghats right next to a gushing waterfall which enhances the beauty of the caves.

Chaityas and Viharas are two types of caves where monks used to pray and stay. Now Archaeological Survey of India looks after this site that showcases many motifs, structures, paintings and so much more from the ancient times.
